Mass media manipulation or more exactly: how the media can manipulate the masses!
It is an unpleasant subject for me as journalist.
I’ve always believed in journalism ethic and standards, and, that’s why, I want to draw your attention about media manipulation:
Some time ago media was trusted and reliable- or I like to think that.
Today, with our blog and web driven media cycle, nothing can escape exaggeration, distortion, fabrication and simplification.
Thus, nowadays, the media—driven by blogs—is assailed on all sides, by dishonest sources, page view quotas, inaccurate information, greedy publishers, politicians’ interests, the demands of the audience, and so much more.
We are – as a society – inundated and overwhelmed with a flood of information from a wide array of sources, but these sources of information, by and large, serve the powerful interests and individuals that own them. The main sources of information, for both public and official consumption, include the mainstream media, alternative media, academia and think tanks.
The mainstream media is the most obvious in its inherent bias and manipulation. The mainstream media is owned directly by large multinational corporations, and through their boards of directors are connected with a plethora of other major global corporations and elite interests.
The primary element of social control is the strategy of distraction . So, this strategy diverts public attention from important issues. It is determined by the political and economic elites, by the technique of flood or flooding continuous distractions and insignificant information.
Also, distraction strategy is also essential to prevent the public interest in the essential knowledge in the area of the science, economics, psychology, neurobiology and cybernetics.
Mass media manipulation – Some techniques used by governments and parties/people with hidden agendas include:
Paying journalists to promote certain issues without the journalist acknowledging this, or without the media mentioning the sources;
Governments and individuals contracting PR firms to sell a war, or other important issues, as refugees, asylum seekers, migrants;
Disinformation or partial information reported as news or fact without attributing sources that might be questionable.
PR firms feeding stories to the press without revealing the nature of the information with the intention of creating a public opinion.
Creating winners and losers in the minds of the already brain-washed public.
While mainstream mass media on the whole represent government and corporate interests, alternative media tend to be non-commercial projects; it advocate the interests of those excluded from the mainstream. Alternative media is the media of the poor, political and ethnic minorities, labor groups, and LGBTQ identities.
Alternative media has been a significant tool for social movements. Social movements in areas such as human rights, the environmental movement, and civil rights, have used alternative media to meet the goals of the movement and to foster advocacy, change and participation
So, you must make difference between alternative media where active citizens promote the values of democracy and digital media fit in the dichotomy between alternative and mainstream media.
So, Facebook, Twitter and other similar sites spreads news and information in order to urge to intolerance. Thus, they potentially acting as alternative media as they allow ordinary citizens to bypass the gatekeepers of traditional, mainstream media . Also, through them, the citizens share the information and perspectives these citizens deem important.
Unfortunately, these social media become a tool of intolerance, racism, xenophobia, homophobia. They develop subjects as border controls against terrorism; other subjects present false terrorist attacks as well as the failure to manage integration in some multicultural societies etc. Most of these kind of information are false.
Also, mass media manipulation contains subjects such as: freedom of speech versus respect of religions. Other sensitive subject is the apocalyptic image about the clash of civilizations.
So, try to be aware to media manipulation as well as be aware that we have no chance for a better future if we not respect the golden rule:
“One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself”
